Tenth Blog

I am not too sure what bulidings I am going to do for my assignment yet but in this lesson I am going to reasearch what bulidings relate to gladiators in ancient rome. I know one of the biuldings I am doing is definety going to be the colloseum but other than that i dont know what to do. I am thinking of doing some of the training camps that are situated near the colloseum but i dont know what there names are or any information on them. Here is some information on the colloseum. The coloseum derives its name from the colossal statue of Nero that stood near the amphitheatre. It is a biulding with 80 arched entrances, 55,000 seats and measures 188m by 156m and is 48m high. The Coloseum has 4 storeys above the ground and below the ground were rooms where they kept the wild animals. The second and the third levels were decorated with marble statuettes. The upper level was covered with a canvas that protected the spectators The wooden floor of the arena was sanded to hold the gladiators firm on the ground.

Ninth Blog

In this blog there will some more reasearch I have done on my topic for this assignment, gladiators. During gladiator battles, when one of the gladiators in a contest was wounded, the crowd went wild. If one of the gladiators felt he was defeated, he would raise his left hand with one finger extended. This was to ask for mercy. It is believed that the crowd voted for death or to spare him by signalling with their thumbs: thumbs up and the gladiator lived, thumbs down and his opponent was to kill him. The defeated gladiator knelt at the feet of the winner and was killed. The winner would receive a prize, such as a golden bowl, crown, or gold coin, along with a palm leaf that symbolised victory. Successful gladiators, or those who fought in a spectacular way, were regarded as heroes, rather like exceptional athletes are today. Women gladiators, known as gladiatrix were once allowed to battle in the arena but this practice was banned in 200AD.

Seventh Blog

Some more information on the life of the gladiator. At the second stage of training, the gladiators received a steel sword and became professional fighters. Their personal attributes, such as strength, physique and talents, were observed by the experienced fighters who decided what type of style each had developed. For example, a gladiator who showed skill on horseback became an eques or a mounted fighter. A gladiators life was an unusual one because death became his business. A strong camaraderie (friendship) existed between the fighters, the strong bond between them arising from the knowledge that they all faced death each day.

Sixth Blog

The Life of a Gladiator

Gladiators were selected from the slave class. If a male slave had the correct attributes, such as great physical fitness he would be considered a suitable gladiator. After swearing an oath, the gladiator then was initiated into the familia or troop and begin his intensive gladiator training at a school known as lundus. The gladiator school were run like army camps with severe discipline and very harsh conditions. Evidence of this was found in the remains of the Pompeian gladiator school, where six shackled bodies were evacuated in the punishment cells. For training purposes the gladiators were divided into two groups, the tirones, who had never before entered the fighting arena, and the veterani, who had some experience of combat.

Fifth Blog

I have been doing some research for gladiators. Gladiators were usually male slaves who were bought for the purpose of fighting. These men were trained killers who swore and oath to live and die by the sword. The origins of gladiators originally came from the Roam funeral service. It was believed that the sacrifice of blood was required to release the spirit of the deceased. So, when gladiator fighting was introduced to Rome, it was accompanied by the funeral of a high ranking person or was performed as part of a remembrance ceremony. The first gladiator fights were held only for a special and selective audience. By the time of the Julius Caesar , however they had a form of public entertainment and tax collecting as well as vote-winning exercises.

Fourth Blog

This is now my fourth blog for this unit and i think that i am definietly going to do gladiators as my theme. A gladiator back in Ancient Rome was someone who fought to the death in a big arena to entertain the rich people of the city. They would use many brutal weapons such as swords, a mace and other dangerous weapons to try and kill each other. There were also animals thrown in to the arena at times such as tigers. If a gladiator became really good and survived aand won a lot of fights then he could become famous and even get realesed from having to be a gladiator. The first gladiatorial fight took place around 264BC when they held it as part of a funeral ritual called a munus. I'll say more in my next blog as I am watching the movie Gladiator at the moment.
This is a picture of Maximus from the movie Gladiator, which we are watching in class, and he is fighting in the Coloseum as a gladiator. I haven't seen much of the movie so far, so i don't really know why he is fighting but I have seen the part where the enemy kills his family and then he gets really angry and sad. I have chosen to do the Gladiator theme because it looks interesting.
Some buildings i can do for my google earth assignment are:
  • The coloseum
  • I don't really know what else yet

This is the famous biulding from Ancient Rome, The Coloseum and it has been around for almost 2000 years. They used to have gladiator fights in the Coloseum during Ancient Rome and that is why i am probably going to use gladiators as my theme for this assignment. I am starting to do some research for this assignment at the moment.

28/02/10

This is my second blog now and I have tried to the it three times now but it hasn't worked and has deleted my work so that is why I have only done one so far. The work sheet we did on class on friday has given me ideas on what to do for my assignment. Ancient Rome was the largest city back then and at the height of its power there were over 1 million people living there which was a lot because there wasn't many people in the world. There were and still are many magnificent bulidings in Rome and some of the stronger ones are still standing. Probably the most famous of these is the Colloseum which was used for gladiator fights back in Ancient Rome. Rome used to suffer severe damage because of the violent fires that would break out in the slums. The slums was a dangerous place and Emperor Augustus introuced a police force to try and make it a less dangerous place.

24/02/10

This is my first blog and I'm not too sure how to use it but i think that doing this will help me. I'm not too sure what I am going to do for my theme yet but I'm probably going to choose between Julio Claudian Emperors, Emperor Trajan or Entertaiment. At the moment I think that the task we have to do is a bit hard and we have to do too much work. I am already behind a bit because I haven't this is only my first blog but i had almost finished my first one and I tried to save and it said it saved but it actually didn't save which is a bit devastating.
