Their personal attributes, such as strength, physique and talents, were observed by the experienced fighters who decided what type of style each had developed. For example, a gladiator who showed skill on horseback became an eques or a mounted fighter. A gladiators life was an unusual one because death became his business. A strong camaraderie (friendship) existed between the fighters, the strong bond between them arising from the knowledge that they all faced death each day.
